What Years of Selling at Anime Conventions Taught Us About Products People Actually Remember
Discovering a product in person feels different.
Online, you can scroll past hundreds of products in a few minutes. At a convention, you walk into a hall filled with artists, brands, displays, prints, collectibles, and thousands of other people looking for something worth stopping for.
You have a few seconds to catch someone's attention.
kahli spent years selling at anime conventions during its original chapter, and those experiences shaped how we think about products even as the brand evolves in a very different direction today.
We learned that people don't necessarily remember the booth with the most products.
They remember what made them stop.
You Have to Give People a Reason to Stop
Convention halls can be overwhelming.
Rows of booths compete for attention, often with enormous banners, colorful artwork, displays stacked several feet high, and products covering nearly every available surface.
It's tempting to respond by adding even more.
But more isn't always better.
A product with a strong design, an unusual display, or something people haven't encountered before can do more than a table overflowing with merchandise.
That's something we're carrying into the next version of kahli.
We'd rather have a collection where individual products have room to be noticed than fill every inch simply because we can.
Small Products Matter
Some of the easiest things to overlook can also be some of the most enjoyable convention purchases.
A sticker, postcard, keychain, letter set, or other small item doesn't require the same decision as a larger purchase. You can discover something you like, take it home, and have a small reminder of the experience.
That's one reason stationery still matters so much to us.
We love products that don't need to be expensive or elaborate to feel special. Sometimes a $5 find ends up being the thing you remember because the artwork made you laugh, the paper felt unusually nice, or you had simply never seen anything like it before.
Small doesn't have to mean forgettable.
But You Need Something People Remember
Affordable products are great for discovery, but we've also learned the importance of having something with more presence.
For the current version of kahli, fragrance is becoming that category.
Perfume creates a completely different interaction than almost anything we've sold before. You can't fully experience it from across the room or understand it from a photograph.
You have to smell it.
That makes fragrance particularly interesting in a convention environment. Someone might stop because of a display, a bottle, or curiosity about what we're doing and then experience something they weren't expecting to find there.
Candles offer another version of that experience, bringing scent into a category people can take home and make part of their space.
We're excited to see how people react to kahli fragrances in person because scent adds something our old convention booths never had.
People Like Discovering Things
One of the best parts of conventions isn't necessarily finding what you came for.
It's finding something you didn't know existed.
Artist Alley is especially good at this. You might go looking for artwork from a series you already love and leave with an original character sticker from an artist you'd never heard of.
That feeling has become increasingly important to how we think about kahli.
We don't want every person who visits us to be looking for the same thing.
Someone might come for a fragrance and discover a Japanese letter set. Someone browsing stickers might smell a candle. Someone who recognizes Moriko might find a perfume they end up wearing every day.
Those unexpected connections are part of the experience we want to build.
Presentation Changes How a Product Feels
Conventions also taught us how much presentation matters.
The same product can feel completely different depending on how it's displayed.
Crowded tables can make even great products disappear. Clear displays give people somewhere to look. Height, lighting, packaging, signage, and even the amount of empty space around something can change how it's perceived.
As kahli moves into a more refined direction, we're thinking much more carefully about that.
Our goal isn't to build the loudest booth in the room.
We'd rather create a space that feels distinctly kahli and gives people a reason to step closer.
Original Art Still Matters
Our relationship with conventions also introduced us to something we still value: independent artists.
Artist Alley is full of people turning ideas into physical objects, often handling illustration, production, packaging, displays, sales, and everything else themselves.
kahli has worked with independent artists worldwide, and collaboration will continue to be part of what we do.
But our approach has changed.
We're no longer trying to define kahli as an artist collective or an anime merchandise brand. Instead, collaborations can exist naturally alongside our own fragrance, characters, stationery, and other collections.
When an artist's work feels right for kahli, we want to create something together because the idea is good, not because we need to fill a release schedule.
The Booth Is Part of the Brand
One lesson we're paying much more attention to this time around is that the booth itself is part of what you're selling.
Not literally, of course.
But when someone encounters a small brand for the first time, the display tells them something before they've picked up a single product.
Does it feel considered? Is it overwhelming? Does everything look like it belongs together? Is there something you're curious enough to walk over and investigate?
For the new kahli, we want our physical spaces to feel more like stepping into our world than simply walking up to a table of merchandise.
Fragrance, candles, stationery, artwork, characters, natural materials, scent, and small details can all contribute to that experience.
That's much more interesting to us than simply putting as many products as possible on six feet of table space.
Returning to Conventions
kahli today is very different from the brand we previously brought to conventions.
That's exactly why we're excited to return.
We're still bringing parts of our past with us: original art, characters, stationery, collaboration, and a love for discovering unusual things.
But we're adding an entirely new side through perfume, candles, and a more considered approach to how kahli looks and feels.
We don't know yet which product will make someone stop.
Maybe it'll be Moriko.
Maybe it'll be a tiny stationery set.
Maybe it'll be a bottle of perfume they weren't expecting to find at an anime convention.
Finding out is part of the fun.
After all these years, that's still one of the things we love most about conventions: you never really know what you're going to discover until you're there.
