The Small Details Behind Moriko and How Simple Design Creates Meaningful Characters

With so many characters and mascots in the world, simple designs can sometimes look effortless. In reality, creating a character that feels recognizable and expressive with only a few details can take surprising thought.

Moriko, kahli's black tiger, is built around that idea.

Moriko was never meant to be cute just for the sake of being cute. Visual appeal matters, but the real goal is to create a character that feels alive through subtle details, expression, proportion, and personality.

A slight tilt of the head can make Moriko seem curious. A relaxed posture can make him feel calm or comfortable. Even small details like the placement of his eyes, the curve of his tail, or the proportions of his body can completely change how an illustration feels.

Individually, these choices might seem insignificant. Together, they create a personality.

Keeping the Design Simple

Instead of relying on complicated details or exaggerated features, Moriko's design is intentionally restrained.

His black body, contrasting stripes, red eyes, bell necklace, and recognizable silhouette give him enough distinctive features to stand on his own without overcomplicating the design.

That simplicity also makes him versatile.

Moriko should still feel like Moriko whether he's sitting quietly, exploring somewhere new, appearing in an illustration, or reduced to a tiny sticker.

Creating that consistency is one of the most important parts of building a character over time.

Designing Beyond the Illustration

Another challenge in character design is thinking beyond what looks good on a screen.

An illustration can contain tiny details, unusual proportions, and complicated poses that become much harder to reproduce as a physical object. A design that works beautifully as a large art print may not translate as well to a small keychain, sticker, embroidered patch, or plush.

We consider that when developing Moriko.

We don't choose common poses like sitting, lying down, walking, or gently leaning at random. They preserve his personality while maintaining a recognizable silhouette that can translate across different formats.

The goal isn't to design everything around manufacturing limitations. It's to create a character flexible enough to exist beyond a single illustration.

One Character, Different Moods

Moriko also isn't meant to have one fixed expression or pose.

Different illustrations can reveal different parts of his personality. Sometimes he's playful or curious. Other times he's quiet, sleepy, adventurous, or simply observing what's happening around him.

That variety makes the character feel more alive.

Over time, these different interpretations build a larger identity. Instead of Moriko being represented by one definitive image, he becomes a collection of little moments that still feel connected to the same character.

It also makes collecting different versions more interesting. Each one can offer something new while remaining unmistakably Moriko.

A Small Presence in Everyday Life

Moriko was designed to fit naturally into the world of kahli.

He doesn't need to dominate everything we make. Sometimes he might be the focus of an illustration or collection. Other times, he may simply appear as a small detail on a piece of stationery, packaging, an accessory, or something unexpected.

We like the idea of discovering him rather than seeing him everywhere.

That quieter approach also reflects his personality. Moriko can be present without always demanding attention.

Growing With kahli

As kahli continues to evolve, so will Moriko.

The brand has grown beyond its original beginnings into fragrance, candles, stationery, art, and carefully selected everyday objects, but original characters remain an important part of its creative identity.

New poses, illustrations, products, and eventually new characters will continue to expand that world.

Moriko is one of the first pieces.

No matter where he appears next, the goal remains the same: keep the design recognizable, expressive, and full of personality without losing the simplicity that made him feel like Moriko in the first place.

Sometimes the smallest details are what make a character memorable.
